“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10
Today’s Word
It’s easy to think of joy as something soft or optional—like a bonus feeling when life is going well. But Scripture presents it differently. Joy is not fragile; it’s a source of strength.
This verse was spoken during a moment when the people were overwhelmed. They had just realized how far they had drifted from God, and their first response was grief. Yet they were told not to stay there. Instead, they were invited to receive joy—a joy that comes from God Himself.
That kind of joy isn’t dependent on circumstances. It doesn’t disappear when life gets hard. It’s rooted in knowing that God is still faithful, still present, and still working—even when things feel uncertain.
When you lean into the joy of the Lord, something shifts. Your problems may not instantly disappear, but your perspective changes. Joy reminds you that you are not alone. It gives you the strength to keep going when you feel tired, the courage to keep trusting when things don’t make sense, and the peace to rest even in the middle of challenges.
Sometimes, choosing joy is an act of faith. It might look like thanking God before you see the answer, worshiping when you don’t feel like it, or holding onto hope when everything feels heavy. That choice is powerful.
Joy becomes strength when you stop trying to manufacture it on your own and instead receive it from God.
Prayer
Lord, I come to You today feeling (honest emotion). Thank You that I don’t have to rely on my own strength. Fill my heart with Your joy—deep, steady, and unshaken. Help me to choose joy even when it’s hard, and remind me that Your presence is enough. Strengthen me from the inside out so I can walk through today with hope and confidence in You. Amen.
